In a musical landscape filled with bombastic hits and overproduced anthems, it’s refreshing to come across an album like whyohwhy’s debut LP, “Bruises”. This Czech band has managed to create a subtle yet captivating collection of tracks that blend elements of dream pop, slowcore, and folk into an immersive and rewarding listening experience.

From the moment the album opens with “Return”, it is clear that whyohwhy is not your average indie outfit. The subdued yet lush instrumentation sets the stage for what is to come, with autotuned vocals adding a modern twist to the traditional sound. As the album progresses, tracks like “River Styx” and “Tangerines” showcase the band’s ability to weave together intricate musical landscapes with hauntingly beautiful vocals.

What sets “Bruises” apart from other indie releases is its ability to not only stand as a cohesive whole, but also offer individual tracks that shine on their own. Each song on the album has its own unique charm, whether it’s the hypnotic guitar work on “Tangerines” or the folkier elements on “Flood”. This album is a testament to whyohwhy’s talent and ability to create music that is both introspective and engaging.

On a scale of 0 to 10, I would give “Bruises” a solid 8.5. This album may not be for everyone, but for those willing to take the time to delve into its depths, it offers a rich and rewarding sonic experience. whyohwhy has crafted a debut LP that is both innovative and timeless, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the future.
