Amazon will soon offer its smart grocery carts to other retail stores

Amazon is expanding its cutting-edge checkout-free technology, Dash Cart, to third-party grocery stores in addition to its Amazon Fresh and select Whole Foods Market locations.

The company announced on Tuesday that it has started testing Dash Cart at one McKeever’s Market and four Price Chopper stores in the Kansas City area. These grocers are the first outside of Amazon and its affiliates to adopt the technology, which allows customers to shop without having to go through a traditional checkout process.

Dash Cart, which was first launched in 2020 exclusively in Amazon Fresh stores, has undergone a redesign and is now being introduced to more clients. The smart carts use computer vision, sensor fusion, and generative AI to provide a seamless shopping experience for customers. As they shop, the carts allow customers to weigh and scan their items, with a real-time receipt displayed on a screen that includes all the items in their cart.

In addition to Dash Cart, Amazon also offers the Just Walk Out service, which enables customers to enter a store, grab what they need, and walk out without having to go through a checkout process. This cashierless checkout technology uses cameras and sensors to automatically tally up the items in a customer’s cart and charge them upon exit.

Despite reports suggesting that Amazon employs human reviewers to monitor the Just Walk Out technology, the company clarified that the system is run by machine learning algorithms without any specific knowledge about individual shoppers. While human workers do label and annotate real shopping data, they do not watch live video of shoppers to generate receipts.

Amazon’s decision to expand both Dash Cart and Just Walk Out technology comes as the company continues to innovate in the grocery shopping industry. By offering these cutting-edge technologies to third-party retailers, Amazon is redefining the way customers shop for groceries and paving the way for a more convenient and efficient shopping experience.

As Amazon looks to expand these services to more stores in the coming year, the company is focused on providing a seamless and personalized shopping experience for customers while upholding the highest standards of accuracy and efficiency in its checkout process.
